CNLU (Chanakya National Law University, Patna) will conduct CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) 2017. The law entrance exam by CNLU Patna will be conducted in an online mode. The national level exam for both the programmes will be of 2 hours (120 minutes). The Questions type in the law entrance exam will be objective (MCQs) in nature and for every wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted. Given below is an overview of CLAT 2017 Exam Pattern.

CLAT is a law entrance exam for candidates seeking admission in LL.B. and LL.M. courses offered by the 18 NLUs across India. As the courses are of UG and PG level, the pattern and the subjects will also be different. Given below is a detailed CLAT Exam Pattern for both of the Programmes.


 

CLAT 2017 Exam Pattern for LL.B.

The law entrance exam’s pattern for LL.B. Programme (UG level) will consist of 5 sections- 

  • English (Comprehension),
  • General Knowledge & Current Affairs,
  • Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability),
  • Legal Aptitude and
  • Logical Reasoning.

The exam will be conducted in an Online mode and the language in which the questions are to be attempted is English. Each question will be of 1 mark and there will be a negative marking also. Given below is the exam pattern for LL.B. programme.

CLAT Syllabus for UG Course

The CLAT Syllabus for the Undergraduate programme covers questions from General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Legal Aptitude, English, Mathematics, Logical Reasoning. The GK and Legal Aptitude section will carry the highest weightage in the law entrance exam. The details regarding each course in order of their weightage is provided below for the reference of students:

In General Knowledge & Current Affairs: This section will include questions from both General Knowledge as well as Current Affairs. The questions on general knowledge will test the knowledge of candidates on some of the prominent aspects of general knowledge. The Current Affairs section will include questions on some of the important topics of national and international affairs. The syllabus is usually very vast and varied for this section. Some of the frequently asked topics are mentioned below for reference: Outline of Indian Economy, National Income of India, Indian Tax Structure, Major Industries in India and Banking & Finance etc.

In Legal Aptitude: This section will test the candidates’ ability and interest towards understanding and solving issues of legal nature. They will have to apply their research aptitude and reasoning to solve various legal propositions. This section would cover: Legal fundamentals and terms, Legal Maxims and Important Landmarks, Supreme Court Judgments.

Know How to Prepare for Legal Aptitude?

In English including comprehension: This section aims to test the grammatical knowledge of candidates. The questions will focus on making corrections in sentences that are grammatically incorrect, filling the blanks in sentences with suitable words, jumbled sentences, idioms and phrases,etc. It will also include passage of approximately 300-400 words and candidates will have to answer questions based on the main theme of the passage as well as some of the key words present in the passage. Some of the important topics to be covered under this are: Comprehension Passages, Subject-Verb Agreement, Noun, Pronoun, Adjective and Determinants, Adverb and Active Passive Voice.

In Logical Reasoning: The section on Logical Reasoning is aimed at checking candidate’s ability to analyze patterns and arguments. This would include a questions on syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. Candidates will have to understand various conditions set in questions and deduce correct conclusions. The important topics under this section are: Logical Puzzles, Statement Conclusions, Derivation of Conclusions, Cause & Effect Reasoning, Statements Assumptions and Statement Arguments.

In Mathematics (Numerical Ability): In this section, candidates will be asked to answer questions based on class 10th Mathematics syllabus (elementary mathematics). It will test candidate’s ability to be accurate and quick with numbers and calculations. The key topics in this section are: Numbers, HCF and LCM, Fractions, Logarithms, Percentage, Time & Distance and Ratio & Proportion.
