Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the T 42 high jump event of the Paralympic games in Rio de Janiero on Saturday. Thangavelu’s medal was joined by a bronze medal won in the same event by Varun Singh Bhati that brought India’s overall medal tally in Rio to two.

Stuart Blackburn was presented the award at the HNS Conference in Oxford for his novel “Into the Hidden Valley”. The book, published by Speaking Tiger, looks into a little-known episode in the colonial history of British India. Blackburn vividly brings alive the world of the Apatanis.

T R Zeliang receives Pangkor Dialogue Award in Malaysia

Haryana wins Best Horticulture State award

Haryana has bagged ‘Best Horticulture State’ award for the concerted efforts made by the state government to increase the income of the farmers in horticulture.
The award was received by Haryana Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar on 9 September 2016 at two-day 9th Agricultural Leadership Summit 2016. The summit was organized by Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) in New Delhi.

Indian Coast Guard commissions offshore patrolling vessel ‘Sarathi’ in Goa

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday commissioned well-equipped offshore patrolling (OPV) vessel named `Sarathi` at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), Goa-based defence shipyard at Vasco in south Goa. This vessel is the third in the series of six OPVs built by GSL for Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

Odisha Govt. launches pension scheme for construction workers

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched new pension scheme for construction workers at a function in Bhubaneswar. As per the scheme, the construction workers above 60 years of age will get pension of Rs 300 per month while workers above 80 years of age will get pension of Rs 500 per month. The widow and disabled construction workers are also eligible to get the benefit of the pension scheme. The State government has also taken several welfare schemes for the construction workers. The maternity benefit has been increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 while seriously ill workers are provided Rs 3 lakh.

MEA launches online module for Indian students studying abroad

For maintaining the records and data base of Indian students studying abroad, Government of India has launched a Student Registration module in MADAD portal. MEA Sushma  Swaraj on twitter urged students studying in abroad   to register  on MADAD portal.

HDFC Ergo completes acquisition of L&T Insurance

HDFC Ergo General Insurance Company (HDFC ERGO) has completed the acquisition of 100 percent shares of L&T General Insurance Company (L&T Insurance) for Rs 551 crore. The company has recently received approvals from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and Competition Commission of India, a statement issued by HDFC ERGO said.

NHPC, BHEL ink pact for renovation of Baira Siul power plant

State-owned NHPC today said it has entered a pact with BHEL for renovation and modernisation of 180 MW Baira Siul power station in Himachal Pradesh.
